TOMS: One for One

This is the story of a man and shoes.  The mans name is not Tom however, it is Blake Mycoskie.  Five years ago this traveler ventured into Argentina.  He became friends with the local children and found that they had no shoes to protect their feet on a daily basis. Wanting to help, he created the ‘One for One’ Movement, otherwise known as TOMS shoes.  The drive behind the company is to give a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair sold.

Since 2006 TOMS has given away over one million pairs of shoes to children in need all throughout the world.

Why are they called TOMS shoes when the inventors name is Blake?  I was lucky enough to listen to an interview with Blake on the radio a few weeks ago, and my question was answered.  They are called TOMS because they are ‘The Shoes of TOMorrow.’

I am a big supporter of the ‘One for One’ movement, but that is not the reason why I wanted a pair!  Walking in a pair of TOMS is like walking on fluffy marshmallows.  They are incredibly soft, bouncy, and comfortable.  The great thing about TOMS is you can dress them up or dress them down.  Everytime you take a step in your TOMS you get a little satisfaction knowing that you gave a child in need protection for their feet.

  1. I’ve got a pair! In fact, I’m wearing them right now. Shiny red ones :) Been getting compliments from strangers when I wear them.
And yes, they’re bouncy, soft and so comfy for long walks. They’re good as a traveling shoes as well.
Of course, knowing that a child got a new pair of shoes when I bought mine also makes me feel comfy and proud wearing them. :)
