My backyard was boring! When we moved in we had no trees, no bushes, no flowers, nothing! Our backyard has needed a makeover for a long time. What we really want is two large trees for privacy from staring into our neighbors homes. With trees we also wanted some bushes and flowers to cover parts of the fence, and a garden of fresh herbs and vegetables.
Trees are quite expensive so we were only able to buy one tree. While it isn’t a big tree, it is a tree non-the-less, and it will be larger one day. A couple of months ago my husband dug a lot of grass out of the backyard, planted our cute little tree, and lined the area with stone.
As you can see there is not much to it, but it was better than nothing! Since we were taking one step at a time and creating the garden slowly, we waited a few months to add to it.
Finally, about two weeks ago, we ventured to Home Depot and Lowe’s and bought the items for our garden.
Against our house we lined-up a few pots:
We plated Periwinkle Hydrangea, our wedding flower. It was a surprise from my husband. I LOVE them! We also planted a few Rainbow Chard Plants. Yum!
We plated two Yellow Squash plants and a Serrano Pepper.
The row of pots was finished with a bright blue pot of Tomatoes and a Jalapeno plant. Overall the pots look wonderful. Since we have planted them all, three tomatoes, a jalapeno, and four squash blossoms have grown. I can’t wait to eat them!
As far as the stone garden goes, we mostly planted bushes and with a few herbs here and there:
A variety of different colored bushes, grasses, and flowers, create a sharp contrast in the garden. Beautiful! The blue flowers are my favorite, and they grow to be the tallest.
Scattered throughout the bushes and grasses we planted (from top to bottom and left to right) we have Mint, Rosemary, Japanese Eggplant, Onions, Watermelon, and more Yellow Squash. We eventually removed the Mint and placed it in a pot because it was taking over the garden. It grows well in Texas!
The completed garden and landscaping dramatically changes the appeal to our backyard. It is much more enjoyable to be in the backyard now. Hopefully we can have green thumbs and everything we planted will survive and thrive.
Next Step: Extend the patio and buy new patio furniture.

Cute! I love the plants.
Thanks! The hail storm the other day destroyed our tomatoes, but hopefully they will grow back quickly.
