No I am not of Mexican heritage but with how much my family loves Mexican cuisine, we might as well be. Since I was a kid a weekly meal out has pretty much always been Mexican! How could you not want to indulge in a big bowl of crispy tortilla chips with a spicy red salsa, alongside a vat of guacamole and an icy-cold margarita? By the time you have enjoyed it all, you really only need a salad to fill you up.
Cinco de Mayo; a great excuse to drink delicious margaritas!
I love margaritas even though they are about the worst drink for you; many margaritas have nearly 1,000 calories in them. Absurd! They are not worth that much fat but I do indulge in them every once in a while. I am not a fan of frozen margaritas so I typically get those that are on the rocks.
I have found over the past few years that sticking to a regular margarita is not much fun, and there are better creations out there; many with far fewer calories. My favorite is the Grapefruit Margarita because it is light, citrus, and refreshing. Using the grapefruit juice instead of margarita mix is far healthier.
Another favorite of mine is a Spicy margarita. Adding a nice kick of heat to a margarita is wonderful on a hot day, and they are usually made with tons of fresh lime juice instead of margarita mix as well.
Often times I find myself craving a dirty martini but do not want something as powerful, so in those instances I enjoy the wonderful Mexican Martini. Yummy! Think margarita with olive juice and jalapeno! It is dangerously delicious and goes down way to fast.
If you want a healthier, better tasting, margarita just be creative. Combining silver tequila with fresh squeezed juices is all you need to have the perfect drink.
